Missing Data 1969-on

The table below shows individual races, and entire race meetings, which are missing from the WASCC results archives from 1969 onwards.

The chances are that all the "missing" 1973 races are motorcycle races, as many joint meetings were held that year. Only race programmes can resolve this, and I don't have them. The missing 300 km results sheets were no doubt borrowed to work out all the class places in the days after the meetings, and unfortunately not replaced on file. The 1987 files are very patchy. There is a possibility that the missing data may yet turn up in another archive box.

1973 12 Aug: Races 4, 12
1990 22-23 Jun (ATCC): Races 5, 6, 11, 12
  16 Sep: Races 3, 4, 7, 8, 11 1993 Feb (if held)

1980 25 Oct: Race 7 (300 km race) 1998 Sep, Oct, Nov, Dec meetings
1987 May meeting, all (if there was one)
2000 March Night Masters;
Jun 14: Races 2, 4, 5, 6, 7, 9, 14 September, October meetings
Aug meeting, all (if there was one)

(In addition to these results, there are also two spreadsheets setting out racing numbers against drivers, cars, and events. Although very patchy, they are a useful research tool:)

About the Results

The detailed results of all Western Australian road-race meetings are not yet available in any one place. Very abbreviated versions (usually just podium positions of feature races at major meetings) for the period to the end of 1979 can be found in "Around the Houses".

This project, which I began about 18 months ago, is largely complete - about 90 percent of all races held in Western Australia now have their results on-line. The major source is, naturally, the West Australian Sporting Car Club, who have promoted virtually all road racing in Western Australia since 1929. The Club is very supportive of this project and has given me the run of their archives.

The results here do not cover speedways such as Claremont, Wattle Grove and country speedways. These have their own independent history and tradition. They do not cover the shortlived boom in TQ Midget racing in the late 1950s, which had its origins in speedway. They do not cover rallies and trials.

WA Racing Organisation

Until 1929 road racing (such as it was) was largely organised by the Royal Automobile Club of WA (RACWA), who were also the local sanctioning and control affiliate of the FIA. RACWA's interest in organising speed events fell away rapidly in the 1920s and the WA Sporting Car Club (WASCC) was founded specifically to organise race and speed meetings. It has done so ever since. RACWA's role was then that of sanctioning and control body, until the Confederation of Australian Motor Sport (CAMS) was formed in the 1950s to take over that role too. In the mid-1980s the Vintage Sports Car Club of WA (VSCCWA) was formed specifically to provide events for owners of restored historic racing cars. VSCCWA runs several historic meetings a year, including "around the houses" regularity events.

WASCC Race Results

Western Australia is unusual in that there is a single body organising road racing - the WASCC - which owns its own circuit, timing equipment, safety equipment and practically everything needed to run meetings. The WASCC has organised virtually every race meeting and speed event since 1929. It would be reasonable to assume that Club has a complete set of its own records, but this is simply not so.

For many years the Club was quite small, and operated out of private homes and tiny rented offices. The purely volunteer administrators and officials were flat out just organising current events, never mind keeping track of ancient history. There has never been an official Club Archivist, and there is no adequate archiving storage (although there are signs that both of these shortcomings will be rectified in the future.)

The Club retains no pre-World War 2 documents, and only a small and erratic collection of pre-Wanneroo Park (i.e. pre-1969) documents. It does, however, have extensive - and possibly complete - details of the results of Wanneroo Park/Barbagallo Raceway race meetings.

The results from 1969 to 1986 were all handwritten, being the official timekeeper's own copies. They have now been transcribed into word-processing and .pdf files. They are all on this site. One oddity is that all the Six Hour Race results sheets, and almost all the 300 km Race results sheets, are missing from those timekeeper's files. From 1987 onwards the results sheets are copies of computer printouts, and seem to be fairly complete, including most 300 km Race results. As I go along, I'm noting the missing results in the second table above.

As for pre-1969, fortunately race meeting results have been published in a variety of magazines and newspapers over the years, and I have been digging them out of these sources. There are conspicuous gaps: The Visor Magazine, official organ of the WASCC, failed to publish the results of the 1968 Six-Hour Race, the last at Caversham. It published no results at all during 1966. Fortunately, official results from this period are turning up from time to time and 1966, once a blank sheet, is now partly completed.

This is a work in progress

Every one of the results documents on this site is subject to updating with more events, or more detailed results, from time to time. The older the results, the less likely they are to be complete. Oh, and there are bound to be corrections.

Note that as time goes by the number of events each year, the number of races in each event, and the number of competitors, has risen steadily.

There were less than a dozen starters for the 1936 Albany Grand Prix. It was one of only 3 race meetings that year, and there was only one race on the card. By 1989 there were 6 to 8 race meetings a year, typically with 16-18 races per meeting, and well over 100 entrants for each meeting. This makes for a lot of paperwork (and a lot of typing).

The 1989 results on this site are on a 50-page word-processing file in PDF format, and it's a big file to download - more than 2 megs. So, for 1990 onwards I am supplying results divided into in two six-monthly parts.
