WA Championships 1969-2007

There has been a proliferation of West Australian Championships in recent years, from the original three - Racing, Sports and Touring - to the present eight or so Championships, varying slightly from time to time.

Championships were originally determined by a single race, later modified to two or three races at a single race meeting, and finally to the present system where they are decided by points scored at various specified races throughout the season. The point scoring system now used is 20 15 12 10 8 6 4 3 2 1 for the first 10 places.

Some Championships have higher status than others. To qualify as a CAMS recognised State Championship, a single-race event had to be over 50 miles or more, and this wasn't always the case. The Torque Trophy is included here as it was for many years the quasi Championship for Street Cars, until the Street Car Championship itself was introduced. There are other series which will probably qualify as Championships on further examination, and will be added: the Endurance series; Road Runners; Six Cylinder Sedans; and possibly the Historic Racing series which ran briefly in the early 1980s.

These tables are noticeably incomplete at this stage, and are being prepared as part of the research for the forthcoming "Around the Raceway" book, to establish whose biographic profiles will apear in the new book. As research continues, the gaps will be progressively eliminated.
